CHANL, the Chapel Hill Analytical and Nanofabrication Laboratory, is housed in Chapman Hall and has 26 major instruments for nano/micro fabrication and characterization. The instrumentation and lab spaces are managed by a staff of four with faculty guidance from the CHANL Executive Director, Jim Cahoon

CHANL was established in 2006 as part of the Institute for Advanced Materials, Nanoscience and Technology. CHANL is now part of the CRITCL laboratories in the Department of Chemistry.

We operate as a shared instrumentation laboratory open to UNC researchers from all departments as well as to researchers from other universities, government labs, and industry. We charge user fees to recover the cost of materials, supplies, and instrumentation maintenance.

CHANL is part of the Research Triangle Nanotechnology Network (RTNN), an innovation hub for transformative nanotechnology research, discovery, education, commercialization, and workforce development. The RTNN is one of 16 sites in the National Nanotechnology Coordinated Infrastructure (NNCI). The NNCI is supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF).
